What is a Certificate of Conformity?

A Certificate of Conformity, commonly called a COC, is a document containing the identification, homologation and type-approval information declared for a specific vehicle.

It is commonly used when registering or re-registering a vehicle in another country.

Is a COC the same as a registration certificate?

No.

A registration certificate confirms that a vehicle has been registered with the relevant authority.

A Certificate of Conformity contains technical and homologation information relating to the vehicle and its approved type.

The two documents serve different purposes.

Will I receive an original COC or a digital copy?

This depends on the product you order.

The relevant FastCOC product page specifies whether the service includes:

• A PDF document
• An original paper document
• Or both

Is a PDF COC accepted by every registration authority?

Not necessarily.

Acceptance of digital Certificates of Conformity varies depending on the country and the authority handling the registration.

Some authorities accept a PDF document, while others may require an original paper version.

We recommend checking the requirements of your local registration authority before ordering.

Does a Certificate of Conformity expire?

A Certificate of Conformity is linked to the specific vehicle and VIN and does not normally have a conventional expiry date.

However, a registration authority may request:

• A recently issued duplicate
• An original document instead of a digital copy
• Additional technical information
• Other supporting documents

Local registration requirements always apply.

Can I request a duplicate COC if the original was lost?

Yes, when a duplicate Certificate of Conformity is available for the vehicle.

Availability may depend on:

• Manufacturer
• VIN
• Vehicle age
• Market of origin
• European type approval
• Manufacturer records

Does the COC include the European type-approval number?

When applicable, yes.

Which technical details are normally shown on a COC?

Can the COC be issued in a different language?

Language availability depends on the manufacturer, issuer and product selected.

In some cases, an additional translation may be available.

However, a translated document does not automatically replace the original manufacturer document. Acceptance of translations depends on the authority receiving the document.

Can information on a COC be corrected?

A correction may be possible when the issuing source confirms that the original document contains an error.

However, a COC cannot simply be altered to reflect:

• Vehicle modifications
• Different equipment
• Changed technical characteristics
• Incorrect information supplied from external records

Any correction must be supported by the appropriate issuing source.

Is a COC guaranteed to complete my vehicle registration?

No.

A Certificate of Conformity can be an important part of the registration process, but the final registration decision is made by the competent authority.

Depending on the country and vehicle, the authority may also request:

What is the difference between a COC and a technical data sheet?

A Certificate of Conformity is a conformity document associated with the manufacturer's vehicle type approval.

A technical data sheet provides technical specifications for a vehicle and may be used in situations where a COC is unavailable or where additional technical information is required.

They are different documents and are not automatically interchangeable.

Always check which document your registration authority requires.

Can a modified vehicle still use its original COC?

The original Certificate of Conformity describes the vehicle according to its approved configuration when manufactured.

Significant modifications may affect its conformity.

Examples can include changes to:

• Engine or powertrain
• Emissions system
• Suspension
• Bodywork
• Seating configuration
• Vehicle category
• Other regulated components

A modified vehicle may require an additional inspection, individual approval or other technical documentation.

What happens if the vehicle was never issued with an EU COC?

Not every vehicle has an EU Certificate of Conformity.
